Responsibilities

The Registered Professional Nurse at Northside Hospital independently plans and provides professional nursing care to patients in accordance with physician orders and established guidelines, and in accordance with the scope of practice as defined by the Georgia Nurse Practice Act.

 

Oncology:

  • Applies the nursing process to assess and provide age-appropriate care for patients receiving medical therapy and/or supportive care.
  • Administers chemotherapy and blood products, monitors patients for associated side effects, initiates appropriate measures as indicated, and utilizes skills associated with vascular access devices.
  • Provides care to patients receiving radiation therapy, taking into consideration source of radiation and length of exposure.
  • Provides care to oncology patients following extensive surgery, which may or may not involve plastic reconstruction and grafting.
  •  Provides care to minimize or alleviate symptoms associated with cancer and cancer therapies.
  • Provides emotional support and facilitates coping of patients and families living with cancer.
  • Provides support to the dying patient and family.
  • Prior to administering chemotherapy, attends a formal chemotherapy administration training course, a similar hospital-based chemotherapy training, or a department-based chemotherapy competency assessment

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  2. Licensed as a RN in the State of Georgia in good standing without limitations.
  3. Must hold Certified in American Heart Association’s Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED:

  1. BSN degree
  2. Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN).
  3. Additional Life Support credential (ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc.) or other clinical specialty certifications in specific units.
  4. Visual color acuity depending on the role in specific units.
