Responsibilities

Operates ultrasound scanning equipment to produce records of designated portions of the human anatomy of adult and geriatric patients.

  1. Collects pertinent medical information and reviews physician’s order to identify reason for examination and potential contraindications.
  2. Explains procedure and positions patient.
  3. Selects proper technical factors and runs transducer over designated area of body.
  4. Observes image and modifies equipment parameters as necessary to obtain optimal image.
  5. May freeze and print frame. Reviews record to ensure correct anatomy is visualized.
  6. May assist physician with biopsy and aspiration procedures, practicing sterile technique as required. Cardiology specials include: Transesophageal Echos, Dobutamine Echos, Stress Echos.
  7. Assembles records for interpretation by physician.
  8. Performs minor maintenance and repairs on ultrasound equipment. Refers major problems to appropriate supervisor.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

 

Requirements for Ultrasound Technologists

Initial Qualifications

  • Certified or eligible for certification by:

                American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS),

                      OR

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Sonography (ARRT) (S).

                      OR

              Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)

  • All sonographers must obtain certification within twenty-four months of eligibility or cross training.)
  • Certified in Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or obtain within 90 days of employment

                                  

Continuing Education

Sonographers must be in compliance with the ARDMS, ARDMS, ARRT or CCI requirements for continuing education appropriate to their practices

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED

 

  1. Graduate from an accredited school of Ultrasound Technology
  2. Prior experience in ultrasound
  3. Registered Cardiovascular Technologist with two (2) years cardiac related experience
  4. Registered Vascular Technologist with two (2) years vascular related experience
