Responsibilities

Provides American Sign Language interpretation services in a variety of settings for patients and families who are deaf and hard of hearing as it relates to medical care. Provides sight-translation of relevant materials to enhance patients’ and families’ comprehension of medical procedures, treatment, discharge instructions, patient and family education, and follow-up care within the interpretation encounter

 

Our ASL Interpreter will cover inpatient and outpatient needs. Mileage reimbursement available for approved assignments. Position note that this position is NOT remote.

 

Schedule: Weekdays as needed (Flexible hours)

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree (any field) or completion of an Alternative Pathway Program approved by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Five (5) years of experience in sign language interpretation, three (3) of which must have been as an ASL interpreter in a hospital or health care setting.
  • Must be a certified member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc (RID) through the completion of the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or credentials by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or any other RID recognized certification (specific to ASL Interpreters)
  • Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people of diverse cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Candidate must have a working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it relates to members of the Deaf community.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong medical vocabulary are required.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving and interpretation skills. Must work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Successful completion of the Interpreter Skills Test (IST) with passing score as administered by Northside Hospital to verify demonstration of the advanced skills necessary for Medical Interpretation.
  • General computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs.
