Northside Hospital Cancer Institute's (NHCI) Cancer Research Program is one of the largest community-based oncology/hematology programs in the nation and is one of the few cancer research programs in the country offering Phase I-IV clinical trials.

Responsibilities

This position provides expert-level knowledge and financial oversight for clinical research to be conducted at Northside Hospital (NH) facilities, including clinical research supported by federal funding, foundation grants, industry sponsors and Northside Hospital. The individual in this position will have the communication, organization and analytical skills necessary to help operationalize the policies, procedures and processes that define the manner in which clinical research is to be conducted at NH. This individual will manage administrative and financial operations within the Central Research Department including contracting, budgeting, accounting, and research billing and compliance. This individual will work with the Research Program Director to develop and implement the strategic plan for research to ensure quality and compliance in the NH research program. This position must possess extensive knowledge of applicable research and financial regulations and guidelines to compliantly manage the department.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Manage the Research Administrative and Financial operations including:

    • The medicare coverage analysis (MCA) process including development, review and approval
    • Internal cost analysis
    • Sponsor budget negotiations
    • Accurate and timely processing of Clinical Trial Agreements, grants and any other contracts or agreements
    • Compliance in the research billing process
    • Research accounting (e.g., sponsor invoicing, budget tracking, vendor payments, physician time sheet approval/payment for research services)
  1. With the support of the Research Program Director, identify areas for improvement within the Research Department and develop and implement new processes, systems and tools.
  2. Liaise with a broad spectrum of internal and external parties, including clinical program leadership (physicians and departmental administration), Investigators, NH administration and senior management, Clinical Research Coordinators (CRC) and Clinical Research Nurses (CRN), departmental research support staff and representatives from contract research organizations federal and industry sponsors and auditors/monitors.
  3. Serve as the subject matter expert for research billing compliance and ensure compliance within Northside Hospital.
  4. Manage the review, development and maintenance of NH’s Research Financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations related to clinical research.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

  1. Bachelor’s degree in nursing, a health related field or business. 
  2. Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a healthcare finance environment, with two (2) years at a supervisor or manager level.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of federal clinical and billing regulations affecting clinical trials and medical research.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED

  1. BA / BS in nursing, clinical pharmacology, or related degree is desired.
    • Experience conducting research is preferred.
  2. Master’s degree in a relevant field of study (e.g., MBA, MHA, MPH,) preferred.
  3. General understanding of human subject protection and Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  4. Familiar with all research administrative business processes ranging from clinical trials, to federally-funded research grants, to sub-contract and sub-recipient agreements.
  5. Experience working within a community hospital and/or physician practice setting is preferred as well as having experience working with investigators that conduct research.
  6. Experience developing and managing budgets for an office or department.
  7. Understanding of hospital revenue cycle operations and billing and coding.
  8. Demonstrate excellent management and organizational skills.
  9. Strong communication and interpersonal skills
