Responsibilities

Operates ultrasound scanning equipment to produce records of designated portions of the human anatomy of infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. 

 

  1. Collects pertinent medical information and reviews physician’s order to identify reason for examination and potential contraindications.
  2. Explains procedure and positions patient.
  3. Selects proper technical factors and performs high quality diagnostic ultrasound.
  4. Observes image and modifies technical factors as necessary to obtain optimal image.
  5. May freeze and print frame. Reviews record to ensure correct anatomy is visualized.
  6. May assist physician with biopsy and aspiration procedures, practicing sterile technique as required. Sets up sterile trays with all supplies and instruments required for procedures.  Cardiology specials include: Transesophageal Echos, Dobutamine Echos, Stress Echos.
  7. Radiology: performs venous doppler exams (upper and lower extremity) and carotid doppler exams.
  8. Assembles records for interpretation by physician.
  9. Performs minor maintenance and repairs on ultrasound equipment. Refers major problems to appropriate supervisor.
  10. Provides assistance with transportation of patient to and from Emergency Room and Inpatient Areas.
  11. Assists with surgical cases in the Operating Room as scheduled.
  12. Assists in orienting and training personnel.
  13. Enters patient charges into computer system.
  14. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury‑accident to Manager.

Requirements for Ultrasound Technologists

Initial Qualifications

CERTIFIED OR REGISTRY ELIGIBLE FOR CERTIFICATION BY:

 

American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS),

                      OR

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Sonography (ARRT) (S)

All sonographers must obtain certification within twelve months of eligibility or cross training.

 

Certified in Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or obtain within 90 days of employment

Graduate from an accredited school of Ultrasound Technology, Prior experience in ultrasound OR registered Vascular Technologist
