Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Maintains thorough knowledge of all Laboratory and Pathology systems (i.e. Cerner PathNet,  Fusion, etc.) and associated hospital systems.
  2. Adapts and develops the Laboratory Information Systems to meet laboratory and hospital needs and ensure regulatory compliance and operations efficiency. Analyzes system functionality and makes recommendations to assure complete utilization of all modules. Assists with capital and operations budget planning.
  3. Collaborates with Laboratory, Information Systems, and Patient Care to plan systems upgrades and coordination of projects for enhancement of the systems. Provides interdepartmental communications regarding systems needs and issues.
  4. Participates in Change Control process and meetings, submits appropriate documentation and ensures that validation in a non-production domain is completed and approved before changes are made in the production domain.
  5. Coordinates software changes and system upgrades. Coordinates the design and implementation of new system functionality. Ensures that proper testing and verification procedures are followed.  Ensures that data is reviewed whenever Laboratory information is being shared between systems.
  6. Participates in design, and monitors and maintains system interfaces to Laboratory instruments, reference laboratories, and Point of Care systems to help insure trouble‑free and efficient operation. Participates with Information Systems interface team in troubleshooting issues with physician office EMRs.
  7. Ensures regulatory and compliance requirements are met with respect to information systems and continual laboratory readiness.
  8. Researches, resolves problems/questions, and acts as resource regarding Laboratory computer systems. Provides timely feedback and direction to laboratory and hospital personnel. Ensures that proper documentation is entered into the hospital Information Systems Help Desk ticketing system when resolutions are completed.
  9. Coordinates hardware repair/maintenance with Information Systems microsystems team as needed. Participates in preparations for new instrumentation installations (assist with cabling requests, security assessment, etc.).
  10. Develops and catalogs departmental policies and procedures for laboratory information systems assuring compliance with various regulatory agencies standards.
  11. Performs daily systems monitoring, and systems audits as required. Coordinates vendor resources during information systems downtimes and ensures proper communications are made to laboratory and hospital departments.
  12. Ensures patient safety is maintained by analyzing/correcting medical record issues such as misidentified patient records in a timely manner and supporting systems such as Power Chart Specimen Collection and Advanced Barcoding and Tracting in pathology.
  13. Provides computer orientation, training, and/or in-service programs as needed. Creates training materials in conjunction with laboratory supervisors and Education/Research coordinator for ongoing reference.
  14. Utilizes existing reporting tools to create reports and provide data and metrics to Laboratory and hospital leadership as requested
  15. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury‑accident to Manager

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

 

  1. S. Degree in Laboratory science, computer science, or related field.
  2. Two (2) years of experience working as an Applications Analyst/Specialist or SR Applications Analyst or similar position in a healthcare environment.
  3. Must possess good analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills with an ability to educate others.

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED

 

  1. Two (2) years working experience in clinical lab, pathology/histology or related healthcare environment.
  2. One (1) year of experience with build, support and maintenance of Cerner Millennium and PathNet.
  3. Experience with implementation and support of Lab instrumentation middleware, including rule writing.
  4. Experience with report writing using CCL, DA2, and/or SQL.
  5. Excellent time management skills and the ability to work independently are beneficial.
  6. Knowledge of laboratory billing requirements.
